Bible Passage Genesis 1: 26 - 28

Be Fruitful And Multiply

  • Rev. [Dr.] William Okoye
Date preached September 18, 2022

Genesis is the beginning of all things. Chapters 1 and 2 give details of the way God designed everything to work. Originally, God designed the human race to be fruitful, multiply and have dominion. God blessed Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth and have dominion.

We are therefore expected to constantly examine our lives in the light of God’s original plan and design for humanity. It is an aberration for you [human beings generally speaking] to live unproductive life, especially when you become a child of God. Unfruitfulness is not God’s will for you. God wants you to maximize and fulfill His plan for your life and fulfill destiny. Anything that would suggest the contrary is not the will of God for our lives.

When we don’t live fruitful or productive lives, it does not bring honour and glory to God. One of the things that make the gospel attractive to unbelievers is when they see a Christian living a prosperous life in all areas; just as believers were first called “Christians” in Antioch, because of their lifestyle. Interestingly, God does not call us Christians; He calls us Disciples of Jesus Christ.

We bring honor and glory to God when we live productive lives. When God blessed Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply, it was actually a biological multiplication [to reproduce]. However, in its application, God expects that everyone He created should be fruitful in every area of life, especially when that one becomes a Christian.

One of the areas God wants us to be productive is in the area of our character. In Matthew 3: 5 – 10, John the Baptist spoke of the fruit of repentance, that must be evident to people that something has happened to you. The Bible says, if any man is in Christ he is a new creature [2 Corinthians 5: 17]. When you say you are a Christian and your life is not reflecting the fact that you are one, then something must be wrong. In Matthew 7: 15 – 27, we see that fruitfulness includes living a godly or Christ-like life. If we call ourselves Christians and we are deficient in living Christ-like lives, we bring disgrace and dishonor to God [Galatians 5: 16 – 26].

Today the kind of orientation the church has, causes it to emphasize on things that are secondary or things that should follow when we do the right thing. Consequently, people troop into the church not to worship God but to use Him to achieve their goals. The numbers in the church keep growing and there is no significant corresponding impact of such growth on the life our nation. It is quite alarming what people do in the church for material gains. For instance, you may be aware of a recent widely reported incidence where a so-called pastor and his son carried out murder to ensure “signs and wonder” in their “church” and then bribed their way out of persecution and jail. In another instance, a self-acclaimed prophet, persuades for the endorsement of certain presidential candidate of contrary values and disposition. If half of the Christian population we have in Nigeria would live according to the Bible, there would be a revival. But the problem is that our actions contradict what we are saying.

The second area that God wants to see fruits is in the use of one’s gifts and talents. Everyone is created for a purpose. God did not create any useless person. The fact that God created you shows you are important. One of the greatest discoveries you will ever make in your life after accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour is to discover your purpose and fulfill it.

Nobody is here by accident, but on divine assignment. You cannot live a fulfilled life by just accumulating material things. For many rich people, the more they acquire riches the more miserable they are. This is because wealth alone cannot give a fulfilled life. It is a purposeful life that gives you fulfillment. All that the world can provide for you is mere emptiness; the only thing of significant is what you do for the kingdom of God. Naked we came into this world naked we would leave. Nobody is here forever and no one is too young to die. No matter how long you live you will eventually die. The moment you die, the only thing that would matter is what you did for the kingdom of God.

When you understand the meaning of life, you will live life to the fullest, glorify God and put smiles in the faces of people by using the gift God has given you. Learn to help people; because when you die, nothing else would matter. 1 Peter 4: 10 – 11, Ephesians 2: 10, Romans 12: 3 – 8 reveals to us that God has given us special abilities and gifts in order to use them to serve Him and humanity. No matter how much you amass to yourself, once you close your eyes in death, it will all mean nothing that is why the Bible says man’s life does not consist in the abundance of things that he has. It also says what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul [Matthew 16: 26]. The Bible further says that if it is only in this life we have hope as Christians we are of all men most miserable [1 Corinthians 15: 19]. Make sure you are productive and that God never regrets creating you.

Thirdly, God wants us to be fruitful in soul winning. If you want to know what is really important to a person look at the way he spends his money and his time. You also know, by the amount of sacrifices the person is willing to make for that thing. How then do we know what is important to God? By His sacrifice on the cross for the salvation of the souls of mankind. Through this we know that what is important to God is the soul of man.

Many of us pride ourselves in the many years we have been in Christ. But in those years how much have you done for God? What do you have to show for it? Soul winning should be a way of life. You do this by praying that God put you in the path of those who need to hear the gospel and by making the gospel attractive each day. In John 15: 16 it says, “Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”

Many of us are seeking for answers, but the moment we make God’s priority our priority, He will make our priority His priority. If you are a Christian and soul winning is not a priority to you, then your spiritual life is lacking in focus. You should also know that the first form of evangelism is your lifestyle that should attract people to the gospel.
