“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” [Ephesians 2: 10].
From our texts, we see that God created and saved Jeremiah, Timothy and Paul for their respective purposes. Similarly, we too were created and saved to fulfill purposes planned by God. It is important to reiterate that everyone and everything created by God has a purpose!
Sadly, many people have attended church services for years without discovering God’s purpose for their lives. Meanwhile, we were created for special assignments, “For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time – to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.” [2 Timothy 1:9].
The ‘Purpose Driven’ concept is one of the best things that ever happened to the church. It has opened up service rendering opportunities, which have in turn created opportunities to be blessed by God, who knows how to reward His children for their willful and sacrificial service.
There are numerous blessings for serving God as captured in Exodus 23: 25 -26, which says: You must serve only the Lord your God. If you do, I will bless you with food and water, and I will protect you from illness. There will be no miscarriage or infertility in your land, and I will give you long, full lives. Another verse enumerating the blessings associated with service include Job 36:11, which says, “… They will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives. All their years will be pleasant.”
It is contradictory to say that you are a follower of Jesus and you are not serving in the church or the environment you find yourself in, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many” [Matthew 20: 28]. The Bible tells us that our reason for existence is to serve God, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul. And you must always obey the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you for your own good” [Deuteronomy 10: 12 – 13].
Serving God is compulsory; it is not optional, “…Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you” [Colossians 4:17]. We should also not procrastinate rendering our services to God; “We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work” [John 9: 4]. We should serve God while we are still strong and able to do so. After all, God is more interested in the investment you make in His work and He admonishes us to “…Serve them sincerely because of your reverent fear of the Lord. Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ” [Colossians 3: 22 – 24].
God did not create anyone of us to just be consumers. We were created to make contributions and add value to life on earth, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” [Ephesians 2: 10]. When you begin to serve God, you begin to experience joy. Are you fulfilling your purpose? Do you have any excuse for not serving? If you are not serving, what will you tell God on the last day? Will you leave your own assignment undone?
Remember that we shall give account of how we used our gift(s) to glorify God and fulfill His purpose [Romans 14: 12 and Revelations 20: 12 – 13]. If every person created by God understands the purpose of God for their lives and keys into fulfilling it, we would not be contending with some of the problems we currently have in our society.
